Tuesday 19th November 2019

Book club Event: God Help the Child by Toni Morrison – Caroline Rose Caroline has for a long time been interested in issues of difference, visible and invisible, and internalised trauma which can be passed on from one generation to the next. There are themes of racism, internalised trauma and child abuse in this book The strong force of internalised racism which can affect future generations even when societal racism is not so overt is expressed here. These themes are relevant to many of us from a personal point of view and they are also often relevant in our work as counsellors and psychotherapists. Using the book and our understanding of it as a starting point Caroline will introduce a discussion with some of her own experiences and encourage others to share theirs.

Caroline Rose has worked in the social care field for many years including working as a probation officer, as a counsellor in a community alcohol team, as a student counsellor in a university setting and in private practice. She is currently working as a staff counsellor for the Only Connect service based at Westminster University where she counsels staff from some of the London universities. She also works part time as a duty social worker for older adults in the voluntary sector. She is a graduate of the MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling at Birkbeck College.
