Desert Island Footprints – Nikky Sternhell
The way we develop as counsellors and therapists can have many influences,
sometimes a book, lecture, poem or conversation can have a particular impact.
Following in the footsteps of a well-known radio programme, we have invited Nikky
Sternhell to be our ‘castaway’, and to choose which of her favourite books, papers or
other literary pieces she would take with her to a desert island.
Nikky Sternhell is a counsellor in private practice. She followed a couple of different
careers before retraining as a counsellor, and graduated from Birkbeck with an MSc
in Psychodynamic Counselling in 2008. She has worked as a counsellor or therapist
for a number of voluntary organisations and also for the NHS. She served on the
Birkbeck Counselling Association committee for a total of five years, including two as
chair, and continues as chair of the BCA/BPC scrutiny committee, which processes
applications from BCA members who would like to register with the British
Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). At the end of 2016 she took on the role of
submissions editor for the journal Psychodynamic Practice, but will shortly be moving
on and concentrating more on her other work.
Maisie Holland will introduce our castaway. During the evening, we will find out more
about the path of Nikky’s career in counselling, and discuss with her the various
authors and writings which have influenced her.
