Turning a blind eye: Sexual abuse and denial

This talk by David Mann will focus on sexual abuse and how the individuals involved, and others, frequently turn a blind eye to its occurrence. This is about more than just incredulity from those who are in a position to know; it touches on a deep wish to believe that the people we trust will do no harm. Clinical material will be cited and some general implications for social issues will be discussed.

David Mann describes himself as a relational Freudian. He is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice, and previously worked for 15 years as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the NHS. He is registered with BPC and UKCP and is also a registered Art Therapist.

He runs an acclaimed workshop on Working with the Erotic Transference around the UK and Europe. Previous publications include: Psychotherapy: An Erotic Relationship, Transference and Countertransference Passions (1997). Editor of Erotic Transference and Countertransference: Clinical Practice in Psychotherapy (1999) and Love and Hate: Psychoanalytic Perspectives (2002). In his spare time he is the songwriter, lead singer and guitarist with his band, The Freudian Slippz.
