Pandemic and Pandemonium:

Psychotherapy in the virtual world.

Engaging directly with our current context, this year’s Summer Conference will be held online. The Conference will consider what is emerging from our experience of the coronavirus pandemic: losses, inequalities and narcissistic wounds, relationships in the virtual world and hopes for new and creative understandings. We welcome your attendance and sharing in this reflective event.

Speakers & Panel Members:

Our Conference title is taken from Professor Bob Hinshelwood’s article ‘Pandemic and pandemonium.’ As introduction, Professor Hinshelwood provides a brief presentation setting the scene and exploring the value of the Psychodynamic Thinking platform and how it can support our capacity to hold together during this difficult time.

  •  Trudy Darien and Mark Waddington will then present their work at Placement Support, which has provided online services for groups, families and professional networks for over five years, working psychodynamically to promote sustaining relationships between children and the adults involved in their lives. Mark and Trudy will provide an overview of the breadth of their work including case studies reflecting how online therapeutic relationships are developed and what they can achieve.
  •  The afternoon’s panel discussion is led by Laurence Spurling and joined by Jenny Sprince, members of BCA and continues the discussion, reflecting on emerging themes and issues from the day.
  •  There will be an after-Conference reception for Laurence Spurling on the occasion of his upcoming retirement from Birkbeck after 35 years of service.
