Does professional registration feel like a muddle, or even a minefield? Why register at all? What’s the difference between BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and BPC (British Psychoanalytic Council), and between accreditation and registration? What are the requirements for any of them? What would be most useful for employment prospects? The workshop will focus on BPC registration because the Birkbeck Counselling Association is a member of the BPC. BPC registration has to be obtained through a member organisation, while membership of BACP is an individual matter and is not obtained through the Birkbeck Counselling Association. But we will also cover BACP registration and accreditation in outline. While we won’t be able to address individual cases, the workshop will cover how to get more detailed help if you need it.

Nikky Sternhell is a BPC registered counsellor in private practice, and chair of the BCA/BPC scrutiny committee, which processes applications from BCA members who would like to register with the BPC. She also completed the BACP accreditation process. She followed a couple of different careers before retraining as a counsellor, and graduated from Birkbeck in 2008. She has worked as a counsellor or therapist for a number of voluntary organisations and also for the NHS.
