Private Practice Workshop

Jacqueline Glynn

A one-day online workshop to consider challenges of starting in private practice.

Embarking on working in private practice for any therapist can be challenging but particularly for one towards the beginning of their career. This one-day workshop seeks to share recent experience of establishing a private practice. It will cover some of the highlights, learnt lessons and pitfalls as well as providing support and practical advice to manage this transition.

Topics covered will include:

  • Readiness – are you equipped (both personally and clinically) to work privately.  What level of experience is needed?
  • Pros and Cons of Private Practice.
  • Getting support – how to find professional supervision and therapy.
  • Managing the “Analytic Superego’ – holding in mind the ‘Good enough’ therapist.
  • Identity – how do we develop a clinical and professional identity?
  • Practical
    • Finding suitable rooms
    • Getting clients – referrals, website, advertising etc
    • Finances – how much to charge, how to bill etc
    • Finances – expenses, taxes etc
    • Contracting with clients – brief overview of assessment concerns, registration and contracts
    • Note Keeping
    • Clinical Risk (Who can you see in Private Practice, importance of assessments, referral to psychiatrists, GPs etc
    • Insurance
    • Professional Registration
  • Working online
  • When things go wrong
  • Self-Care
  • Building ongoing peer support (aim to start peer group from course to create ongoing support)
  • Plenary

The Workshop is aimed at students at the end of their clinical training who are thinking of starting their own Private Practice. The BCA upholds the ethical standards of BACP and BPC and will not encourage a student to start in Private Practice and work beyond their clinical competency. We therefore ask students who want to join the Private Practice workshop to provide written proof they are in their 3rd year of a MSc clinical training.

We will encourage attendees to form a peer group from the workshop attendee group that can share information and provide peer support going forward. We will consider the aim and expectations of such a group during the workshop.
