Darian Leader on the Pandemic

Interviewed by Nick Barwick

For this year’s Autumn talk, following last year’s much appreciated interview of Adam Phillips by Nick Barwick about Brexit, we are pleased to announce Darian Leader has agreed to be interviewed by Nick  Barwick about the Pandemic.  Darian Leader brings a unique psychoanalytic perspective enhanced by his wide ranging interests in the arts, and Nick Barwick brings a group analytic and psychodynamic counselling perspective enhanced by his literary and musical interests.

Engaging directly with the context in which we find ourselves, this event will be held online.  The interview will be spontaneous and offers an opportunity for us to hear Leader’s and Barwick’s thoughts and feelings, and share our own about the here-and-now circumstances of the pandemic.

Speakers:

Darian Leader is a psychoanalyst working in London and a member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research and of The College of Psychoanalysts-UK. He is the author of several books including: ‘Why do women write more letters than they post?’, ‘Freud’s Footnotes’, ‘Stealing the Mona Lisa: What Art Stops Us From Seeing’, ‘Why do people get ill?’ (with David Corfield), ‘The New Black: Mourning, Melancholia and Depression’, ‘What is Madness?’ ‘Strictly Bipolar’ and ‘Hands’, and his most recent book, ‘Why Can’t We Sleep? (2019). He writes frequently about contemporary art.

Nick Barwick is Professor and Head of Counselling at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He is a group analyst, UKCP registered psychotherapist, author and (pre-pandemic) gigging musician. He is the immediate Past Editor of the journal Psychodynamic Practice and co-author of several books, most recently Group Therapy: a group-analytic approach (Routledge 2018).

There will be opportunities for participants to discuss in both small groups and a plenary. Those interested in contributing directly to the initial  interview are invited to submit questions and thoughts for exploration to Mark Davidson by Thursday 19th November:

 admin@birkbeckcounsellingassociation.org

Submissions will be used, wherever possible, to inform the developing conversation.

This online event is in collaboration with the journal Psychodynamic Practice.

The first/interview part will be recorded for transcription and publication in the journal.
***only the interview between Darian Leader and Nick Barwick will be recorded***
The BCA’s AGM 2020 will follow the Autumn Talk.
