Date/Time
Date(s) - Saturday, June 16th, 2018
9:30 am - 4:00 pm

Dr Joanna Ryan – Class, Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Practice

Joanna Ryan, author of the recently published Class and Psychoanalysis: Landscapes of Inequality will present issues around the themes of her book. She argues for combining a psychoanalytic with a psychosocial approach to the emotional landscapes of class, the hidden injuries, disavowed privileges and the vicissitudes of social mobility. She will illustrate how class can inflect clinical work, and addresses inequalities of access to therapy and counselling, and to trainings.

Joanna Ryan, Ph.D., is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist; she has worked widely in clinical practice, teaching and supervision; in academic research; and in the politics of psychotherapy. She is co-author (with N. O’Connor) of Wild Desires and Mistaken Identities: Lesbianism and Psychoanalysis; co-editor (with S. Cartledge) of Sex and Love: New Thoughts on Old Contradictions; author of The Politics of Mental Handicap and many other publications.

Rachel Gould and Nicola Godwin – Gender diversity and the problem of psychoanalysis

We will explore the, at times, uneasy relationship that exists between trans/gender-diverse identities and psychoanalysis and ask the question: is history in danger of being repeated? We will draw on contemporary thinking and case material for the purposes of discussion.

Rachel Gould qualified from the University of Sussex as a psychodynamic counsellor in 2002. Since then, she has worked as a counsellor with adults, children and young people in a wide variety of settings, including for LGBT specific organisations. She holds a clinical post at Westminster University and teaches on the Adult Masters at Birkbeck and the PGDip in Child Counselling at the Place2Be. She is a doctoral candidate at Exeter University where she is also completing a training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Rachel also has a background as an activist within the LGBT community, beginning with campaigning against Clause 28 and for an equal age of consent.

Nicola Godwin is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and senior clinician in an NHS Psychological Therapies Service. She is chair of the training committee at the Guild of Psychotherapists, and teaches at Birkbeck on the MSc Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, as well as on the Tavistock’s Consulting & Leading in Organisations programme.
