The Riots: Them and Us A Psychoanalytic Perspective

The Riots of August 2011 were shocking and disturbing for most. The extreme levels of anger, violence and lawlessness aroused fear and
unease about what seemed to be a moral and social collapse. David Cameron’s view was that “There are pockets of our society that are not
only broken, but frankly sick,” But exactly what sickness did the Prime Minister think that the rioters were suffering from? Frank Lowe will
explore the idea of the riots as both symptomatic of a deep malaise and as an unconscious request for recognition, understanding and
thoughtful containment/engagement. He argues that to understand the ‘sickness’ requires as much of an examination of those who did not riot
(us) as those who did (them).

Frank Lowe is a Consultant Social Worker & Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in the Adolescent Department at the Tavistock Clinic. Prior to this he was a manager of a local authority’s children and mental health services and a Social Services Inspector at the Department of Health. Frank is a clinician and lecturer at the Tavistock, has written a number of papers on race and psychotherapy and is the Chair of Thinking Space: a monthly learning forum at the Tavistock which seeks to promote thinking about psychotherapy and marginalised
communities.
